Throwing a kids' birthday party should be fun for all. It just takes awesome planning and a splendid birthday cake to make the best kids' birthday party in Sydney. Here are some other tips to help perfect your kids party planning skills.

#1 Birthday Party Time

When it comes to party time, it is easy for parents to get stressed, blow the budget and vow never to do it "that way" again. Throwing a birthday party for your child should be fun for all. It just takes accurate planning, a well-paced party schedule and a delicious birthday cake.

Remember to get the birthday boy or girl involved in the preparations, keep the party between 1.5 to 2 hours to avoid any over-excited meltdowns and if number of prospective attendants becomes an issue, use the fallback rule that the number of guests should equal the age of your child plus one. In addition, do not forget to include Drumkins in your plans.

#2 Choose themes for your kid's birthday party

If you are hosting the party yourself, it helps to have a theme; often it is a no-brainer (your little boy is super-hero-mad). However, if you are scratching around for ideas, here are a few possibilities that a kids' birthday party in Sydney should have:

• Traditional fancy dress - for boys and girls of all ages

• Builder theme - for boys age 2-5

• Fairy or princess - for girls age 2-8

• Under the sea - for boys and girls age 3-8

• Pirate - for boys (and girls!) age 2-8

• Spooky - for boys and girls age 6-10

Alternatively, you can take the easy option and choose a theme from the party packs (paper plates, napkins, party favors, kid's drums etc.) available at party suppliers or larger retailer shops.

#3 Foods, glorious food

Good food is one of the things to do for kids during birthday party in Sydney, but keep the offerings simple; party pies and sausage rolls, cupcakes, crisps, mini 'smiley' pizzas, or fairy bread always go down well. It is also good to keep any party theme going, for example 'biscuit wands' (biscuits baked on the end of paddle pops) for a fairy party, or a jelly boats (made in half orange) for a pirate party.

Be aware of any food allergies - it is best to avoid anything with nuts (including peanut butter sandwiches) and offer a gluten-free option. One of the good things to do in Sydney for kids during birthday party is to offer some healthy snacks, like 'traffic light' fruit pops (balls of watermelon, rock melon and kiwi fruit on a paddle pop).

#4 Book Drumkins to make fun filled games for the birthday kids

You can go all out and hire games equipment (such as jumping castles) and entertainers or you can opt for traditional games that never lose their appeal - especially with younger children. Three- and four-year olds would enjoy Pin the Tail on the Donkey, Simon Says and What's the Time Mr. Wolf.

Five- and six-year-olds may enjoy robust games like three-legged races, sack races and egg-and-spoon races. Older children will be ready for simple crafts like making pirate hats, princess crowns, Sydney drumming or other novelties. Moreover, everyone loves to have a go at whacking the piñata to release a shower of toys and lollypops.

#5 Book a kids' party cake that represents your theme.

Ideally stick with your theme when you want to host your kids' birthday party in Sydney (or pick a theme to fit the cake you want to make!). It is fun to sit with the kids and let them eat as much cake as they want on their big day. The old favorite 'Women's Weekly: Kids Party Cakes' book is ideal for this.

Some suggestions are a dinosaur, a pig or bear (some skill required), a fairy castle or pirate ship (more difficult), or a skate park or friendly dragon cake (quite tricky).

For an easy option opt for a 'jungle' or 'planes, trains and automobiles' that use some of your child's toys to decorate a standard iced cake.

#6 Give and receive

Ideally set yourself a budget per child and stick to it. Good options for party bag fillers are pencils, erasers, balls, stickers, Drumkins kids' drums, hair clips and jewelry (for girls), small toy cars/dinosaurs/animals, small books, small bottles of bubbles and, of course, lollypops.

Hiring Drumkins to entertain your kids during their birthday would be wonderful. You can also save money on the p arty bags by buying brown paper bags and having the birthday boy or girl decorate them in advance. This works especially well if you stick with the party's 'theme'. In addition, remember that it is fine to tailor the goodies to each child's age - one does not have to fit all!
